For our honeymoon we decided that we wanted to book a South African safari, but given that we would be making the long trip from the United States, we also wanted to explore an island in the Indian Ocean.
Enter, Mauritius. Located about 2000 miles off the coast of South Africa. This tropical destination is very popular among Europeans, but you say Mauritius to Americans and the response is usually “I’m sorry Mauri-huh?”
This year round tropical destination is beautiful. This island in the Indian ocean is one where people are highly diverse in ethnicity, culture, language, and faith.

LANGUAGE:
There is not one “official” language for Mauritians. Most natives are proficient in multiple languages. However, the most spoken languages are English, French, and Creole.
WHERE TO STAY:
We stayed at the Constance Belle Mare Plage. This hotel offered both “all-inclusive” and a la carte. Word of caution though. Even though it’s “all inclusive” be aware that some restaurants only offer a certain monetary credit vs. a traditional all inclusive resort.

WHAT TO DO:
If lounging by the pool or beach is more your vibe, there are endless options for R&R and to work on your tan. Whether it’s the beach, jet skiing, or renting a catamaran these activities are all easily accessible from your hotel.
If sightseeing is more your speed check out the spots below. Ask your hotel for a private driver for the day. It’s likely more cost effective and you can easily check out the following places in one day:
- Black River Gorges National Park
- Chamarel: 7 Colored Earth. There’s also a rum factory nearby if that’s of interest!
- Ganga Talao Grand Bassin
- Port Louis, the capital city. In my opinion the markets here left something to be desired. My recommendation is that you spend a majority of your time walking along the Caudan Waterfront.
November – February
Ideal warm and balmy temperatures. However, this is summertime in Mauritius aka peak tourist season.
April – October
Considered “winter” months. I’m not talking cold per se though – usually the lowest temperature is in the 70s and you can save a boat load on airfare and hotels.
January – March
Cue Move Her Body Like a Cyclone (anyone anyone?). Ha! In all seriousness though this is prime cyclone season so I’d avoid traveling here during these months.
OVERALL:
Mauritius was a beautiful island with a mix of African, Hindu, and French influences. We were able to relax, recharge, sightsee, and I also ate the best lobster I’ve ever had in my life.
